Housing Roadmap, More homes for South Australians

In a move to address the housing needs of South Australians, the State Government has unveiled its Housing Roadmap. Our Housing Roadmap charts our way through the housing crisis currently affecting South Australians. The SA Housing Trust will play a vital role in getting more people into affordable and public homes.

The Housing Roadmap introduces a series of measures, including the largest ever land release, the abolition of stamp duty on new homes, enhanced rights for renters, expanded workforce training, faster home construction, significant infrastructure investment, and an increase in public housing.

We are investing in 5000 public housing homes and we are turbocharging the construction, maintenance and repair of public housing in South Australia. We are on target for the first period of growth in public housing in decades, with 1025 homes projected for completion by 2026.

Total commitments to public housing total 4,817 homes by 2026, including major updates and upgrades to existing homes:

  • 437 new homes are being built under the Public Housing Improvement Program (PHIP)
  • 127 new homes are being built under the additional housing program
  • 461 new homes are being built under as part of ongoing work
  • 350 homes are being upgraded under the PHIP
  • 3000 homes are being maintained PHIP
  • 442 through the Social Housing Accelerator Payment

An additional 580 homes have been saved by stopping viability sales.

By 2026, we will also have built 1000 affordable homes for purchase, and we are already halfway there. These homes are listed for sale on our homeseeker.sa.gov.au site exclusively for eligible buyers – at least 500 properties are listed for sale each year on HomeSeeker SA.

The plan also gives us an opportunity to re-name as the South Australian Housing Trust. Now is the moment to broadcast the incredible role we play. The South Australian Housing Trust remains an extremely well recognised name within the community. Bringing back the Housing Trust in a new era reflects our contemporary role in the housing system –now providing a broad range of services to the community.

The Trust has also welcomed a review of its maintenance contracts, which will comprise surveys with key stakeholders and a round-table.

We continue to play a major role as the biggest rental housing provider in the state – we build and manage public housing across South Australia. Around 35,000 individuals and families live in our rental properties, paying an affordable rent of no more than 30% of household income, making housing security a reality for thousands.

Every year, we help thousands of eligible households with the upfront costs of renting like bond and rent in advance and arrears through the Private Rental Assistance Program, assisting them to secure private rental properties.
