The Short Term Housing Program provides short term housing for people who are experiencing a severe housing crisis.
This policy sets out who is eligible for the program and how these tenancies are managed.
Eligibility
People can't apply for the Short Term Housing Program. Housing SA may refer a person to this program if they meet all the below:
- they’re eligible for housing in line with the Eligibility for housing policy
- they’re experiencing a severe housing crisis
- they can't access other appropriate housing, for example renting privately, living with family or friends
People must meet both the below before they can be offered a property:
- they arrange to repay any debt they have to Housing SA
- they agree to participate in a case plan that sets out short and long term goals, and strategies to address them during their tenancy
Lease agreements
Housing SA will offer the tenant a short term lease agreement, also known as the Conditions of Tenancy, for between 4 to 6 months, depending on the tenant's circumstances.
Housing SA reviews the tenancy at least 4 weeks before the end of the lease agreement to determine if they’ve met the goals agreed to in the case plan, if they need more time to meet their goals, and the next course of action. This can include:
- their lease agreement ends
- offer another short term lease agreement
- they are helped to access other accommodation, for example renting privately
Managing the tenancy
Housing SA manages these tenancies in line with relevant Housing SA policies, including:
Tenants can't apply for a transfer. Housing SA may initiate a transfer if either:
- there’s concern for the household's safety
- the property is needed for other purposes, for example redevelopment
