This policy sets out:
- who is eligible for the program
- the type of assistance provided
The Private Rental Liaison Program supports people who have trouble accessing private rental, but could maintain a private rental tenancy with some support.
Eligibility
Customers are eligible for the Private Rental Liaison Program if they meet both the criteria below:
- they’re eligible for private rental assistance in line with the Private Rental Assistance Program policy
- they’re able to maintain a private rental tenancy but need help accessing it, for example they don’t have necessary social skills to negotiate with landlords or real estate agents
Housing SA interviews the customer to assess:
- they’re eligible for the program
- if they’re able to maintain a private rental tenancy with some support
- what type of assistance they need
Referring a customer to the program
Customers can be referred to the Private Rental Liaison Program after either:
- a housing advice appointment
- a Private Rental Assistance Program assessment
- they’ve attended a Housing SA private rental liaison workshop
Type of assistance provided
Housing SA provides customers with information to help access private rental, for example finding information about open inspections.
Housing SA may provide practical support to help find and maintain a private rental tenancy for up to the first 6 months of the tenancy, for example advocating and negotiating with real estate agents on the customer’s behalf.
Housing SA stops providing support if the customer:
- doesn’t attend a scheduled interview with Housing SA on 2 occasions
- declines 2 private rental properties that are appropriate to their needs and circumstances
- doesn’t comply with reasonable requests by the landlord or agent to address a breach of the conditions of their lease agreement
- has maintained their private rental tenancy for 6 months
