Increasing housing supply
The SA Housing Trust is delivering the most substantial increasing to public housing supply in South Australia for a generation. Building more public and affordable homes means more South Australian individuals and families have access to safe and secure housing, and it is creating jobs and strengthening the state’s economy.
A better housing future
The A Better Housing Future initiative is the State Government and SA Housing Trust’s immediate response to the challenges confronting the local and national housing market. The initiative includes more public and affordable housing, more help to buy and affordable home, more help for tenants in the private rental market, and more community housing through stronger partnerships.

Public Housing Improvement Program
The State Government has allocated an extra $177.5 million to build 437 more public homes across South Australia, while a further 350 vacant public homes ae being upgraded to make them available for individuals and families in need.
The Program also includes a maintenance blitz to upgrade more than 3,300 tenanted public homes.
With a further 127 homes under construction through the Additional Housing Program and halting the sale of 580 public homes around the state, the SA Housing Trust is significantly increasing housing supply by more than 1,200 properties.

Government funding programs
As South Australia’s principal agency for delivering public and affordable housing, the SA Housing Trust leverages the funding for housing programs provided by the Federal and state governments to increase housing supply in South Australia.
The programs funded by the Federal government include:
- National Housing and Homelessness Plan
- National Partnership Agreement on Remote Indigenous Housing
- National Housing Accord
- Housing Australia Future Fund
- Social Housing Accelerator - $135.8 million for SA to build 300-400 public and community homes by 2025
The SA Housing Trust is also working to support the South Australia Government’s Economic Plan, which aims to create “a smart, sustainable, and inclusive economy where housing, infrastructure, and design are critical to developing a wellbeing economy”.
Delivering government housing commitments
As part of its role as South Australia’s principal agency for delivering public and affordable housing, the SA Housing Trust delivers government housing commitments to support the community and to underpin the state’s economy. Government policies and programs currently being delivered include:
- Housing Security for Older Women Taskforce
- Priority housing allocations for domestic and family violence
- Park Court ‘build to rent’ project
- Public Housing Improvement Program
- Affordable Housing Initiative
- Implementing changes from the review or the Residential Tenancy Act
